December 28th 2010. Most people will remember this day as the day when New York City got blasted with snow. For me and the lucky few who were privileged enough to be in a small corridor of Bushwick, Brooklyn that night, it will be remembered as the day when hip-hop proved it was ALIVE and definitely IN THE BUILDING!!
It wasn't supposed to be like that, but then again nothing is ever supposed to be anything other then what it is and tonight that would prove to be a blessing. You see, the events of the night we're supposed to take place inside one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) venues in all of NYC, a place called Webster Hall. Maaaan it was supposed to be the hip-hop event that brought the year out with a BANG! with artist like the legendary Pete Rock, Smif n Wessin, Rah Digga & Capone n Noreaga. But the blizzard of 2010 had different plans that evening, and where some might call it an unfortunate turn of events, I call it divine intervention!
Not even a big bad blizzard was enough to stop magic from happening that night, all it did was slightly alter its location! My man Self-Suffice the Rapoet was slated to perform that night along with a few other up and coming artist. I was the first to reach Webster Hall and could not get in the building, Self arrived shortly after I did and upon further investigation we realized that the event had been silently canceled. I say silent because no one bothered to communicate the cancellation via a sign on the door or a post on the website. Self immediately informed everyone he invited to hold off on coming to Webster Hall and await further instructions while he figured out how to salvage the night.
His boy Undakova, an MC from the L.E.S (Lower East Side for all y'all who don't be knowin') informed him that another MC who happens to be broke (Broke MC) was celebrating his 31st birthday at a very beautiful bar (Beauty Bar) in Bushwick. Self informed everyone that we were to convene at Beauty Bar and take it from there. What happens next is amazing and truly is the essence of hip-hop.
